Charlie and his much younger girlfriend, Miranda-a stupendous creation-navigate this new world together, and as Adam struggles with what he is, McEwan explores complex themes of consciousness, being, and self as well as the impact Adam’s existence has on Charlie and Miranda. The narrator, Charlie, lives in south London in the 1980s, and he decides to invest his sizable inheritance in an Adam, one of the first fully conscious androids. Here he imagines an alternate history in which technology advanced much faster than in real time, and the great polymath Alan Turing lived much longer. I know what can be done with non-linear storytelling, so I had hopes for the story. Split between a contemporary setting in the 1950s, there’s room to play around with parallels between the two sets of characters and events. It was actually the shifting between settings that caught my interest, initially. ![]() And the author does make some attempt to ground the story in its respective time-frames – making the distance between the two time-periods felt well enough, while also showing the similarities between the two. The plot utilized is an interesting premise, not a revolutionary one but certainly with the potential to make a good story. That’s certainly not the case with this book. Normally, when writing a summary or book review, I feel like I have trouble condensing the story down into a few sentences.
